Wollongong's Surfside 22 Motel reopens

New owners preserve historic charm with a twist

Remember those old-school beachfront motels? Surfside 22 has brought that nostalgia back with a modern twist. This charming new boutique motel is now open taking bookings from the 19th of August, ready to transform Wollongong's hospitality scene. With vibrant, quirky vibes and a touch of luxury, Surfside 22 is set to be the ultimate spot for tourists looking for a unique stay.

Originally established in 1963, Surfside 22 quickly became a cherished part of Wollongong's history. Known for its spacious rooms and prime location within walking distance of the beach, restaurants, and the WIN Entertainment Centre, it offered a well-connected stay. Over the years, however, it gradually deteriorated and became known primarily as a budget option.

The new owners have honoured the motel's historic roots while crafting a boutique haven. Their vision was to create something quirky and cool for Wollongong, rather than simply demolishing and rebuilding. This ensures that Surfside 22 retains its iconic charm while providing modern comforts.

“After years of tossing around the idea of a motel passion project at family dinners, the right opportunity finally came up. The initial inspection was daunting, and we knew it would be an all-hands-on-deck type of project. We wanted to pay homage to the motel's iconic beginnings and rebuild something special for Wollongong and our future guests. We think we’ve done just that!” says Nichole, Surfside 22 co-founder.

The motel has undergone a full transformation, blending its original character with a luxurious mid-century Palm Springs design. With 16 elegantly designed rooms equipped with kitchens and bathrooms, this revitalisation not only breathes new life into a beloved landmark but also introduces a fun and stylish stay for travellers visiting Wollongong.

Guests can also enjoy a rejuvenating sauna, a refreshing plunge pool, and a seamless self-check-in/out service. The motel are committed to setting a high standard for sustainability and environmental responsibility in the hospitality industry. With a dedication to eco-friendly practices is evident in our use of biodegradable coffee pods, bamboo toilet paper, and bathroom amenities with biodegradable packaging. Guests can also enjoy O&M soaps, shampoos, and conditioners that are vegan and PETA-approved, ensuring an eco-conscious stay.
