The Tradie Hack That’ll Save You a Bomb

If there is one thing that homeowners find out real fast, it’s that home maintenance isn’t optional. As the saying goes, ‘from little things big things grow.’ It’s a sweet sentiment, until you realise it applies to issues around your home too. What starts as a few leaves in your gutter may seem inconsequential now, but you may live to regret putting off cleaning those gutters when the flood season hits, the stormwater has
nowhere to go and you end up with the indoor swimming pool you never asked for!

If you think home maintenance is costly, it’s nothing compared to what it may cost you not to keep on top of things. The good news is there’s a little known tradie hack that could save you big money, and all it needs is a little forward planning on your behalf.

Plan Your Home Maintenance in the Off Season

The secret that the professionals don’t tell you is that you can save substantial amounts of money by booking outside of the busiest season. It makes sense when you think about it — hot water systems always pack up in winter, air conditioners go on the fritz in the middle of summer heatwaves and everyone is doing their home reno’s in spring in the hope of having their home ready for Christmas. So, instead of waiting for the worst to happen and then having to stump up for eye-watering emergency call out fees, plan ahead.

Many outdoor tradies are quieter during the winter so it’s often easier to find someone who doesn’t have a long waitlist. This can be a great time to get your air conditioners serviced and cleaned, or have a plumber take care of blocked backyard drainage

For some trades the period after Christmas (January – February) can be quieter, although if you’re after something like an oven or dishwasher installation, periods that coincide with major shopping events such as Black Friday and the Boxing Day sales, may push up demand (and the bill!)

Don’t be afraid to ask your local tradie when the quietest time of year is for them, so you can plan around that for a better deal or faster turnaround time. By avoiding the busiest times to do your home maintenance, not only will you save yourself money and stress, but you’ll also have the pick of the best tradespeople. Whether it’s a new hot water system, a home renovation or a simple installation, the smartest time to book is when evefrybody else isn’t!
