Harnessing the Sun for Tassies to Enhance Safety and Energy Efficiency

  • Written by Scene Magazine

Solar power is the technology of the future. Even without green initiatives being enacted all over the world, the cost efficiency of solar is enough to convince anyone, especially for those living in
Tasmania and other such states or countries that receive ample sunlight year round. Solar panels are becoming the norm even across the outback and are the ideal choice for those hoping to live off the grid.

However, there are a few things to consider when choosing the environmentally friendly route. As with everything, there are always two sides to every coin, and the most obvious but often overlooked factor is the issue of maintenance.

Keeping costs low and output high

In order to maximise efficiency and performance, solar panels need to be cleaned regularly. It is important to keep those panels free from dust so that they are able to absorb energy effectively and in the long run, it also helps with increasing the lifespan of the hardware as residue does not build up.

Dirt, salt deposits – especially around the coastal areas of Tasmania – moss, and bird droppings, are all a hazard to solar panels. Contaminants will block sunlight from being absorbed, which means less electricity is converted, even if you’re getting sun every day. According to research, dirty panels generate 20% less energy, with other studies pointing to higher efficiency loss, depending on how badly maintained the panels are.

Getting down and dirty is crucial when using solar panels

For those that rely on conventional electricity, they won’t have to worry about regularly inspecting their solar panels. But those that want to be more energy efficient will have to get their hands dirty every once in a while. An advantage of regularly cleaning those panels would also alert homeowners to any wear and tear, which can also contribute to the longevity of the technology as well as maintain its integrity.

Practice safe solar ownership

Tasmania has a unique climate of clean air coupled with frequent rainfall and the occasional frost – clean air means less accumulation of debris, but rain and frost can cause problems. The proximity of the coast also means that there is a higher risk of corrosion. That’s why maintenance in Tasmania is so much more important and getting qualified professionals in to service those solar panels is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Technicians will be able to ensure that everything is running smoothly and that the panels are cleaned properly, avoiding the risk of damage.

With the rise of affordable solar panels for households in Tasmania, it would be a wise investment not only to install them, but to learn how to care for them properly. While there aren’t any proper courses available for homeowners to take, one should take the opportunity to learn from technicians or their providers, as it is something that will continue to gain traction well into the future. Much like social media and smartphones, there’s no going back as solar is the way forward.
